Living in Kuala Lumpur

Moving to a new country can be daunting for all the family.

The Alice Smith School has been welcoming expatriate families new to Kuala Lumpur since 1946 and so we understand some of decisions you have to make and we hope this information and useful links help your move run smoothly.

What to bring from home?

You can generally buy everything you need in Kuala Lumpur in terms of food, furniture and clothing but some of our families have recommended a few items which maybe more difficult to come by.

Black leather school shoes - these are a compulsory item of school uniform and although there are good quality shoe shops in KL (even a number of Clark’s shoe shops from the UK) their range and sizes maybe low in stock, particularly in larger sizes (UK adult size 10 and above).

Small electronic items such as toasters - they are widely available but well known brands can be much higher in price than you can perhaps get at home.

Large sizes - if you have particularly tall members of your family or they take large sizes in shoes or clothes you may find limited choice in larger sizes in Asia. You may wish to bring a good supply of clothes and shoes suitable for a tropical climate with you.

Local Customs

Malaysia is a multicultural but mainly Islamic country. You should respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions at all times and be aware of your actions to ensure that they don’t offend, especially during the holy month of Ramadan or if you intend to visit religious areas.

You should also dress modestly, particularly in conservative and rural areas and when visiting places of worship.
