Primary Overview

Our curriculum is built on a model of Intent, Implementation and Impact.

Primary Overview

This means your child's learning will have clear outcomes that you as a parent can see and understand how they are being reached.

Intent

Our intent is to enable all students to flourish and thrive. We do this by delivering the English National Curriculum enhanced by our international setting.

Implementation

At Alice Smith School we have created a curriculum model which clearly outlines the:

  • Key knowledge, skills and vocabulary to be taught
  • Character-developing experiences to be offered throughout the primary phase

Primary underlying principals

Learning and Teaching at our school is research evidence informed and underpinned by the principles of cognitive science and positive psychology.

    CUSP primary curriculum

    Our resulting curriculum is:

    • Sequenced and progressive - scientifically mapped to support deep, long-term learning
    • Broad and balanced
    • Adapted, designed and developed for students with talents, special educational needs and/or disabilities
    • Unapologetically ambitious to include desirable difficulties
    • Complimented with assessment to enhance learning
    • Rich in powerful knowledge, skills and vocabulary
    • Interwoven with a shared language of character strengths
    • Strengthened by deliberate consideration of our international setting
    • Enhanced by wider curriculum opportunities

    Our teachers

Our highly skilled and knowledgeable staff deliver a rigorous and engaging curriculum. Our environments are carefully planned in order to provoke learning, interest, creativity and thought. Our teachers provide support and challenge and stimulate learning in a variety of ways.

Throughout Key Stage 1 we combine direct instruction from teachers with a play-based approach to learning. The ‘Prime Areas’ of learning; Personal, Social and Emotional, Communication and Language, Physical Development are prioritised alongside core areas of early reading, writing and Mathematics. Ensuring students are secure in these areas is critical to their future achievement and for supporting their transition to a more formalised learning approach from Year 3 upwards.

Across Key Stages 1 and 2 English, maths, science, computing, music, PSHE, wellbeing, languages, humanities, art & design and PE/swimming are taught every week. We are ambitious for our students and encourage them to aim high, and take advantage of as many opportunities and experiences as possible.

The table below shows the specialist teaching allocation for different year groups, along with sample timetables of what this may look like in a week.
