The A Level Edexcel Product Design course requires a significant amount of study in the area of design.
In Unit 4 - Commercial Design Project, students would gain significant benefit from interviewing a professional designer. Therefore to further expand the student’s knowledge and awareness beyond the classroom Mr Quirk and the DT department organised a trip to a company specialising in Architecture, Strategic Planning, Interior Design and Graphic Identity Design.
The trip allowed students to get firsthand experience of how designers work, as well as the opportunity to conduct an interview with the director Mr Martin Haeger.
The trip commenced with each student (Amir Ahmad Kamal, Izzy Harrison, Aishah Khan, Julian Morisset and Tristian Smeeton) explaining to Mr Haeger their intentions for future study and career direction within the field of design. These included Architecture, Product Design, Material Science and Media & Communication.
The meeting continued with detailed discussions where each student explained their major project design briefs with Mr Haeger. Lots of useful and thought provoking advice was given on how to explore possible design direction and other important design considerations.
A tour of the design office/studio was also conducted where students could see Architects, Interior Designer and Environmental Designers working on current client based project.
The trip concluded with Mr Haeger demonstrating and providing advice on practical aspect of being an Architect in the construction of 3D concept models of structures.
