On Tuesday 24th March, ten very excited but
nervous students from Year 5 and 6 entered the hall to take part in the Public
Speaking Competition 2015.
The selection process began a few weeks before with all
the students in Year 5 and 6 being given the title ‘The most important event in
history.’ Their task was to write a speech that had an interesting opening,
creative thinking ideas, was persuasive and had a clear conclusion. All the
students had the chance to present their speech to their class and then a
winner from each class was put forward to the final.
The finalists were then asked to present their speech
once again but this time to all of Key Stage 2 as well as the three official judges,
Mrs Wellington, Mrs Shine and Mrs Nadarajah. We listened to some very
persuasive arguments that focused on key inventions being introduced to the
public such as the aeroplane and electricity to very unique events such as
Hayden’s own birth and the first person to wear clothes!
The confidence the students displayed and the way they
commanded the stage was fantastic. Each and every one of them showed exactly
why they were selected to be in the final. When giving her feedback, the judges
pointed out to all students that they all could have won in particular categories
as each and every one of them had specific strengths.
The results were very close and trying to decide a
winner was exceptionally hard. After much deliberation between the judges they
chose their top three. India from 6S came third with her speech stating there
isn’t one most important event and in second place was Hayden from 5S whose
speech was about his own birth. However, the winner this year was Audrey from
6H for her speech on the first man landing on the moon. Her speech had
everything the judges were looking for, well structured, detailed research used
as well as excellent presence on stage.
Well done to Audrey and all the finalists that took
part, it truly was a fantastic competition and showed once again how amazing
our Alice Smith students are.
