KLASS Torpedoes is the school swim team.
Swimmers compete for the school in friendly, league, state and
inter-school meets (ISAKL, PRAKL, SAG, FOBISIA and SEASAC) in Malaysia and
Contributing factors to selection for KLASS Torpedoes
Qualifying time from try-outs in either the current term or from pre-qualification.
Number of students in year according to gender. Aim for 8-12 girls and
8-12 boys per cohort as a guide.
Overall size of the team (in order to accommodate purposeful training).
A guide of Green times for Years 3 & 4 and Bronze/Silver
times for Years 5 & 6, although this varies from cohort to cohort depending
on the ability of the year.
Stroke mechanics & swimming skills.
“Coachability”, attitude, behaviour, potential.
The group standard progress times are intended as an internal team
document for motivational and training group purposes. They are not minimum
standards to qualify into the team. Proof of time from previous schools or
clubs are useful and interesting to the coaching team but alone are
insufficient for selection. A try-out must be attended. (Late-comers in term
may receive special consideration).
The swimming coaching teams professional judgement - the coaching team
has the final decision on selection
Expectations to remain in KLASS Torpedoes
Maintaining attendance to training group expectations.
Entry into at least one meet per term.
Good behaviour in school and at KLASS Torpedoes training/meets.
If the above criteria are missing or the swimmer is injured or unwell
then an individual try-out will be arranged for them to regain their place.
For Year 4, students must progress from Red to Green by the end of the
Failure to meet these criteria may result in squad relegation or being
asked to leave
Junior KLASS Torpedoes
In the last session of each term, a time trial is run for qualification
to move into Red and the main squad.
Year 3 Junior KLASS Torpedoes must qualify for Red by the time trial in
Term 3. If students do not qualify, they will have to come to an open try- out
as a Year 4 the following September.
Progression is subject to both Red squad times being legally achieved AND
to demonstrate acceptable levels of stroke mechanics, starts and turns as
judged by the coaching staff
Ideal target squad size is 20 - 26 with 1 - 13 in each group, although
this is variable
Selection into Junior KLASS Torpedoes is based on a bias towards Year 3
in Term 1. This evens out in Terms 2 and 3
Selection is based on the swimming teachers’ professional judgement of Year
2 & 3 swimmers in curriculum lessons.
Term 3 swimming gala times may be used as a guidance tool for selection
Places available in the group vary from term to term and are wholly
dependent on how many swimmers are successful at getting into Red squad from
the previous term’s time trials
1. Year 4-6 try-outs happen at the
start of each term and are usually run over 2 days to give flexibility on when
the try-out can happen. These are usually 100m free and 100m IM.
2. Group Standard Time trials for
existing KLASS Torpedoes swimmers to progress training groups. These are over
the distances the swimmer need to focus on for the next squad up.
