On Sunday 1st June, Sophia D., Kylie and Samuel C., (junior KLASS Triathletes) competed in the Hong Kong Life Triathlon Championships 2014 at Science Park, Sha Tin.
As expected the sun was blazing hot and the humidity level climbing to over 85% making the conditions very challenging and demanding.
The swim was in the Tolo harbour with a 'in the water' start, which was a new experience for the 3 KLASS athletes. The water was fresh but the frantic start from a water treading position soon had the heart racing, building up for a n exciting 250m swim.
The second new experience was the exit from the swim; climbing out, and up the harbour wall steps before running 150m to transition.
The bike course took the athletes out on a reasonably flat, fast public road circuit with one lap measuring 2.9km. Kylie had to complete 3 laps while Samuel and Sophia completing 2 laps. After a relatively long run with their bikes from the dismount line to the bike racks, the athletes then headed out to the run along with the promenade. By this time, the conditions were sweltering with no shade and only a light sea breeze to offer any rest bite.
Kylie completed 2.5km, whereas Sophia and Samuel did 1.8km.
The overall results as follows :
- Age group 2002 : Kylie C. - 8th place
- Age group 2003 : Sophia D. - 2nd place
- Age group 2004 : Samuel C. - 4th place
Well done to the three KLASS triathletes for completing to the best of their ability at the highest level in extremely tough conditions and competitive field.
