Alice Smith received a go-kart a few years ago from a past student, which was stored away in D&T department, and sadly quietly forgotten. One parent spotted it during the 2015 summer fair and wondered whether the kids could have some fun with it by cleaning it up together, and get some hands-on learning about mechanics in the process.
The Gokart ECA started in January this year with the help of parent and engineer, Jerry Joynson, and D&T dept. teacher, Ian Quirk. Seven eager students signed up: Zhen Rong Yap, Mikey Turner, Jet Hilborne, Kenzie Fauzi, Ernest Yap, Zhe Khang Chong, and Cameron Daniels.

Strip down and rebuild
The students worked well as a team to pull the kart apart to find out what was going to be required to get this kart on the track again. After a couple of hours with the kart lying in bits across the floor, it was clear what was going to be required to get it working again.
The summer term team sign ups included Cameron Daniels, James Faehrmann, Kenzie Fauzi, Zach Fritz, Hashim Majeed, Thomas Moggie, Alissa Money, Ojass Prakash, Zhen Rong Yap, Ernest Yap and Mikey Turner.

Commissioning and track day
The refurbished kart was taken down to Shah Alam karting track for an exciting race day. Karts were hired so everyone could have a go. It was a fabulous day out and with some very stiff competition there was a very close result.

Next year ECA
The students are super keen to build a hovercraft next term based on plans for a hovercraft made from plywood. It’s very ambitious, and (if approved) will be really exciting to build. With lots of parts and materials to find, and a challenging build; the students will require some help. We would also welcome some sponsorship.
If you’d like to help out in any way: hands on in building, sourcing equipment or with sponsorship, your help would be very welcome.
