From 11th – 13th May 2017, The British School of Beijing, Shunyi welcomed 120 students from 21 international schools across 9 countries in Asia to the FOBISIA Secondary Maths Competition. This was an exciting three days of competitive, recreational mathematics involving a variety of questions and puzzles. Alice Smith entered two teams comprised of some of the top mathematicians in Year 7 and 8.
The event kicked off on the Thursday evening with some excellent ice-breaker activities, to help students from different schools get to know one another.
On the Friday morning, three individual rounds took place in the school, followed by a maths trail. This involved answering a series of questions, which were scattered across the school, in the correct order. It was an exciting afternoon; everybody was extremely enthusiastic and participated brilliantly. The day ended with a meal at a local Chinese restaurant. This provided students with a truly memorable occasion as they experienced the culinary delights that Beijing had to offer.
The Saturday morning built on the group activities from the day before, with both Alice Smith teams partaking in two relay rounds, where over 20 questions were to be answered as quickly as possible. Each new question had to be collected from the team’s teacher, so plenty of running ensued. In between the relays, students took part in what was one of the highlights of the day, the construction task. This saw the FOBISIA teams building catapults out of lollipop sticks and elastic bands; a challenge which really brought their engineering skills to the fore. All pupils then got to compete for whose catapult could fire a rubber the furthest, with one of our teams coming 4th in this.
The event concluded with a prestigious awards ceremony, where medals and trophies were given out in recognition of special achievement. Many congratulations to everybody who took part in the event. A special mention must be made of the amazing Alice Smith School representatives from year 8: Niharika Desai, Patrick Daly, Anna Driga-Ferguson and Hashir Majeed, and year 7: Victoria Tan, Yushi Kimura-Davies and Evan Kok.
