On Wednesday 9th March, 36 very tired but excited KLASS Lions and six teachers/coaches met at KLIA for an early check-in to fly to Shanghai for the U13 FOBISIA Games. For many, it was a first visit to China and we were all guessing what Shanghai would be like.
We were very impressed with our beautiful surroundings as we made the 45 minute journey from the airport to our hotel. Arriving at 7.30pm after a very early start and a long day travelling, we were all ready for dinner followed by bed.
We were welcomed to Dulwich College by Chinese Drums and impressive dancing on Thursday 10th March, and the games were officially opened. The first day of competition was the football and we had high hopes for our two talented teams. It was a freezing cold day and constant supplies of hot drinks and warm clothing were required to keep spirits high! Our teams started brilliantly and played some impressive football. Emotions ran high as the girls competition got tighter and tighter, while the boys stormed ahead, seeming untouchable. At the end of a cold and tiring day, our incredible boys were victorious, taking away the gold medal position. The girls were very unlucky to come third place, with the silver and bronze teams only being separated by goal difference.
Day 2 of the competition saw the start of the basketball competition. The girls stormed their first game, beating the hosts Dulwich College quite convincingly. The boys were less fortunate and it took them until game 2 to get into their winning stride. The rest of the day was filled with tension, tears and triumphs, with KLASS Lions dominating the competition. The girls took away gold medals and the boys, silver, only losing out on the top spot by one basket.
The final day saw a very early start and a trip 1 hour across town to the athletics track. With the development of school facilities, we knew that this was going to be our weakest event. With some outstanding individual performances from Matthew Trott, Omar Ogbeide, Sadie Gordon, Elliott Cook, Owen Allwood and many others, we managed an impressive 4th place overall. There was only time for a quick lunch before we headed to the pool for the final afternoon, it was the turn of the swimming. KLASS dominated the pool, only missing out on 2 podium places throughout the entire competition. We faced tough competition from Bangkok Patana, but we ended up clear winners.
It was an incredible games for all our students, coaches and parents and we couldn’t be happier with the results. FIVE trophies were won, three gold, one silver and one bronze. It was our best performance at the FOBISIA games for many years and the attitude, determination and talent of our students was incredible. Well done to all U13 FOBISIA students and thank you to those parents who travelled to China to support.
