Saturday 26th October was a very special and exciting weekend as it was the first time Alice Smith fielded 6 teams; 3 boys teams and 3 girls teams in the U11 Uplands Football Tournament in Penang.
Each team was ready for action and following a thorough warm up, and a squad photo, we took to the pitch.
Girls A Team: KLASS A
The girls entered the tournament high in spirits and loud of voice. The line up was strong, even with two key players missing. The girls knew their individual roles within the team, and sought to execute them with a work like attitude and skills to match. Apart from our two defenders, everyone managed to get on the score sheet. Even our goalkeeper, Riya, came up to tuck away a penalty. But just as important as the goals are, is our rock-solid defence, who only conceded one goal in the entire tournament. Their philosophy being "You stop the other team scoring, you will never lose". The results were conclusive, that we were the strongest team in the tournament, and goal scoring never proved a problem. All the girls did us proud, and proved great ambassadors for the Alice Smith School.
Year 6 Girls: KLASS B
The girls’ Year 6 team played exceptionally well throughout the tournament. Their mid field and defence were consistently strong, and they developed their attacking play as a team pleasingly. The girls conceded only a small number of goals, and achieved a number of 0 – 0 results, but unfortunately they could not put the ball in the back of the net! The team’s effort, motivation and energy could not be faulted and they should be proud of their achievements. Well done Year 6 girls!
Year 5 Girls: KLASS C
The girls’ Year 5 development squad went from strength to strength with each game played. The girls worked well as a team to ensure that they used midfielders to full advantage in all games and ensured that goalie Lily was supported in defence. Winning impressively 3-0 against SCIP ‘B’ team they drew on their success to face their toughest opponents, the other KLASS teams! The defence worked with sheer grit and determination against KLASS ‘B’ team to secure a 0-0 draw and were still in high spirits after a loss to KLASS ‘A’. The team should be proud of their efforts, learning from each game and showing an exemplary team spirit!
Boys Lion Squad: KLASS A
The Lions Squad combined to showcase an outstanding display of KLASS football. On the way to being crowned the champions, they combined strength and determination with flowing footballing creativity, a combination that proved to be too much for any of the other teams to handle!
In goal, Johnny English was sensational not allowing a single goal to be conceded as he led from the back. Throughout he was supported by the composed, organised and rock solid defence of Felix, Johnny Hay and Maxime. Our midfield of Sam Wake, Kieran, Kofi, Kasper and Jayden dominated all teams that stepped in front of them. With interlinking passing and incisive movement, in attack they were ruthless. With a high tempo press combined with solid technical tackling, they defensively squeezed the life out of the opposition. A comprehensive performance all round. Up front Marnix was ruthless in front of goal, bagging a sensational goal tally.
Whilst showing individual flair and technical ability the strongest contributing factor to the boy’s victorious campaign was their teamwork and strong togetherness in every aspect of the day. They played as a team; they won as a team.
Boys Performance Squad: KLASS B
The Performance Squad demonstrated exceptional performance throughout the tournament. They played as a team and went from strength to strength as a unit, creating many goal scoring opportunities. The team qualified for the semi-finals, which during the play off, resulted in a draw which could only be decided through penalties. Unfortunately luck was not on their side and they lost the opportunity to take on KLASS A in an all KLASS final. Disappointed, but clearly not shaken, the team played a sensational 3rd/4th play-off match and secured 3rd place in the tournament. Well done boys, you should be very proud of yourselves!
Boys Development Squad: KLASS C
The first tournament of the season saw the development squad show their sublime quality and talent finishing a respectable 5th. As the boys continued through the group stage they were undefeated and looked strong. The last match of the group stage saw the boys hit the woodwork repeatedly but couldn't find a way past the solid defence of their opponents. Resulting in a 1-0 loss. The team were joint winners of the group with 8 points. Unfortunately goal difference was against us and resulted in the boys fighting out a battle for 5th and 6th place.
This is when the magic happened…quickly getting over the disappointment of not getting to the semi finals, the boys turned on the class, winning 10-0 in their first playoff game - Max, Louis, Dylan and Tyler were among the goal scorers. Finally the boys rounded off a very successful day with a 6-0 in their last game. All boys in the team should be very proud of their performances.
Well done to all who were involved and big shout out to Mr Grimshaw, Mr Atkinson, Miss Montgomery, Mrs Blake and Mr Kerr for all of their hard work and commitment!
