In 1946 Hugh and Alice Smith had just arrived in Kuala Lumpur and needed a school for their children. They found that the schools usually attended by expatriates in the Cameron Highlands had not yet reopened. Like many other post war residents, they did not want to be separated from their family after the turmoil of the recent conflict. Mrs. Smith decided to educate her own daughter and as word spread about what she was doing, she had soon opened her doors to the children of her neighbours. By the time she and her family had left K.L in 1950, she was the Head of a flourishing school. The British, Australian, New Zealand and Irish parents of the children attending her school were unwilling to lose what had been established, and formally incorporated the Alice Smith Schools Association, a non profit making educational Foundation, to administer the newly named Alice Smith School in which a British style of education could be offered.

In 1952 the school moved to its site in Jalan Bellamy near the Istana Negara (Royal Palace), and in September 1997, 430 students started a new chapter in the history of the school when a second campus opened at Equine Park. The Jalan Bellamy site has been refurbished as a specialist facility for primary education catering for children from Pre-school and Reception to Year 6 (i.e age 4-11) and September 2002 saw the opening of a spacious new block for Years 5 and 6. The Equine Park campus caters for secondary school students form Year 7 to sixth form (age 11-18). A new purpose built split level library, lecture hall and classrooms opened in September 2003 to complete the building plan and enhance the provision for the sixth form.

The Alice Smith School has provided a high quality British style education mainly for children from the British, Irish and Australasian communities in Kuala Lumpur. However, the school welcomes students of all other nationalities provided they can access the curriculum in the medium of English. Prevailing guidelines laid down by the Malaysian students are admitted within Government regulations, and the prevailing guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education.
