THE Cancer Research
Initiatives Foundation received a financial boost from funds raised
during the Terry Fox Run last year.
Cheques totalling more
than RM40,000 were handed over to foundation trustee Toh Puan
Aishah Ong at a ceremony held at the Subang Jaya Medical Centre
(SJMC), recently. The organisation is located on the second floor
of SJMC.
Alice Smith International
School students and representative Myrt Power Jay, International
School Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) students and representatives Jody Stiles
and Lynne Smith, and Australian International School students
and representative Peter Hilbig presented the cheques.
Also present was the
High Commission of Canada second secretary (political, economic
and public affairs section) Che van Haastrecht.
The Terry Fox Run last year was organised by ISKL, Alice Smith
International School, Mont Kiara International School, Australian
International School and the French International School in collaboration
with the Canadian Association of Malaysia and the High Commission
of Canada.
The run was initiated
in 1981 after Canadians were moved by Terry Fox's Marathon of
Hope where the Canadian who was suffering from cancer ran across
Canada to raise money for cancer research.
Fox, who was diagnosed
with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) in his right leg, died in
1981.
The structural organisation
known as the Terry Fox Foundation raises funds for cancer research
through the annual Terry Fox Run.
All monies raised outside
Canada must be distributed to an institute approved by the foundation.
Cancer Research Initiatives
Foundation is the first independent and non-profit cancer research
organisation in Malaysia, conducting research in three areas.
These encompass the
identification of molecular signatures of cancer cells, the characterisations
of genetic risk factors in inherited predisposition of cancers
and development of novel cancer therapies derived from local flora.
The 2006 Terry Fox
Run will be held at the Lake Gardens in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 17.
San Francisco Coffee
is organising the event with the support of the Canadian High
Commission and the various international schools in Malaysia.
