Physical Education
All sports, for all people
Baron Pierre De Coubertin

The philosophy of the PE and Sport faculty at the Alice Smith School is embodied in the words of Baron De Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics.

We trust in the concept of ‘sport for all’ and believe that regardless of a child’s previous experience, size or shape we can help them find a physical activity to enjoy and one which they will hold with them for a lifetime. We aim to build positive experiences around sport whilst also striving for excellence in performance.  Our goal is that by the time they leave the Alice Smith School every student will not only have an appreciation of sport but also understand the importance of physical activity on their health and well being.

Within PE lessons students will experience a wide range of activities, from individual activities like swimming, athletics, kayaking and fitness training through to traditional team games such as football, rugby, netball and basketball.  In addition to this we also offer courses at GCSE and A Level. The faculty is made up of six fully-qualified teachers and three support staff who work together to provide excellent teaching and coaching in lessons, for the school sports teams and for our after-school sports clubs.  We are blessed with extensive sports facilities including playing fields, a 50m swimming pool, a large sports hall, a fitness suite, all-weather basketball courts and tennis courts.

In addition to PE lessons, the faculty runs an extensive year-round programme of competitive sport and recreational sports clubs, the latter of which is part of the school’s  overall Extra-Curricular Activities programme (ECAs).
