The Alice Smith School’s policy is that set homework
should enhance learning - either by developing work carried out in the lesson
or by preparing the student for the next lesson.
Sometimes homework is
project-based and will be set over several weeks. In Years 7 to 9, subject homework is set regularly
and follows a specific homework schedule for each year group. Generally two to
three pieces are set per night with each piece to last no longer than 20
minutes (Year 7), 25 mins (Year 8) and 30 mins (Year 9).
For Years 10 and 11, where students follow (I)GCSE
examination courses the nature and amount of subject homework will depend on
the subjects being studied. Again it is set according to the homework timetable
which is usually three pieces set for half an hour each.
Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13) are required to spend
about 15 hours of personal time per week on homework and study and are expected
to independently manage their own time.
