Science
Nothing has such power to broaden the mind as the ability to investigate systematically and truly all that comes under thy observation in life.
Marcus Aurelius

Science stimulates and excites students’ curiosity about phenomena and events in the world around them.

It develops critical thinking skills and enables students to make-meaning of their world and to form questions based both on the knowledge they already have and the insight they wish to gain in the future. Enquiry-based science is at the heart of our teaching at The Alice Smith School. Through play opportunities, our younger students are encouraged to question, investigate and collect evidence from an early age.  In later years, pupils are encouraged to think creatively to help explain, in more complex terms, how living and non-living things work. We promote the importance of the pupils formulating their own questions, carrying out testing and observation gathering evidence and measurement, and evaluating the success of their investigations.

Placing learning in context is an important aspect of Science at The Alice Smith School, both through cross-curricular links with other subject areas (such as Music, Maths and Physical Education) and through developing links within our community. Such opportunities include the Year 6 visit to Nottingham University Malaysia where the pupils study microorganisms under the guidance of professional scientists in high-tech laboratories. Many classes also spend time at our Secondary Campus where they have practical lessons with specialist Secondary Science teachers in the state-of-the-art science facilities.

Practical hands-on experience is important for all students. At the Primary Campus there is a dedicated Science classroom, complete with an impressive range of scientific equipment, available to all year groups.

Nothing has such power to broaden the mind as the ability to investigate systematically and truly all that comes under thy observation in life.
