Music

Music is a source of inspiration, enjoyment and fulfilment through which children learn to express their thoughts and emotions musically. The opportunity to work towards creating and performing music is an invaluable part of a child's education.

Music is a universal language that is understood across the world by all cultures, enriching people's lives, promoting cultural awareness and requiring a combination of specialist skills. Music at the Alice Smith School opens the doors to this world of opportunity through the music curriculum, school productions, participating in one of our many choirs or ensembles or by learning a musical instrument.

A rich and diverse music curriculum develops as students move through the school and helps reinforce learning in other subjects. Creativity is a fundamental element throughout our practical music curriculum during which students are encouraged to express themselves freely and develop their understanding of  sound through the various musical elements.

Peripatetic Music Program

There are many benefits of learning to play a musical instrument. Studies have shown considerable positive influences to a child's brain, resulting from the study of a musical instrument. Music has also been proven more effective in strengthening abstract reasoning skills in children.

Students at the Primary Campus are offered the opportunity to learn a musical instrument in a course of one to one private lessons in one of our purpose-built sound-proofed music rooms. The Peripatetic Music programme offers private lessons in Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Tenor Horn, Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, Guitar, Ukelele, Piano, Drums and Voice.

Concerts and Events

PERFORMING

Performing in front of an audience can be a memorable moment in a young person’s life. Months of rehearsals, practice and hard work, can culminate in an adrenaline-packed, spine-tingling, unforgettable performance.

Students at the Alice Smith School are encouraged and are given many opportunities to perform to an audience. This includes performing to parents in Music Moments on Friday mornings and participating in termly concerts, annual school productions and assemblies.  The school choir, musical ensembles and the orchestra also have opportunities to perform at events for the wider community in Kuala Lumpur, including the Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph and Christmas services at St. Mary’s Cathedral and the British High Commissioner’s Residence.  There is also a wonderful opportunity for our most musically gifted students from the Primary Campus to participate in the regional Performing Arts Carnival run by FOBISIA (The Federation of British International Schools in Asia). This event is hosted by a different school each year and we have taken students to Beijing, Jakarta, Vietnam, and Hong Kong.

Musical Clubs and Activities (ECAs)

Why play in a music group?  Social, teamwork...important because...

Students are also encouraged to participate in various musical School Clubs and Activities, who perform at regular events throughout the school year. These clubs include choirs, music ensembles and orchestras. We currently offer Junior Strings and Guitar Ensemble.
